Axillary hyperhidrosis refers to excessive underarm sweating. It’s thought to result from overactivity of the nerves that stimulate the sweat glands, often triggered without heat, stress or exercise. This can be distressing and difficult to manage with standard antiperspirants, affecting confidence, clothing choices and daily comfort.
-
Hyperhidrosis can be effectively treated using botulinum toxin injections, which work by temporarily blocking the nerve signals that stimulate the sweat glands. A series of small injections are placed just under the skin across the underarm area, targeting the glands directly. This reduces or stops excessive sweating in the treated area, usually within a few days. Results often last several months.
-
To ensure highly targeted treatment, we use the Minor’s Iodine-Starch Test - a diagnostic technique that helps identify exactly where the sweat glands are concentrated. An iodine solution is applied to the underarms followed by a light dusting of starch. Areas of excessive sweating react with the solution turning a deep purple colour - clearly highlighting the most active zones. This allows for precise placement of botulinum toxin injections, ensuring effective, personalised treatment with maximum results.
-
The treatment usually takes around 30-60 minutes. After cleansing and conducting Minor’s test to map the best treatment area, a series of small injections are placed just beneath the skin. Most clients find it only mildly uncomfortable. You can return to normal activities straight away, though it’s best to avoid vigorous activity or antiperspirant application for 24 hours before and after treatment. Results typically begin within a few days, with maximum benefit seen at two weeks. Results can last 4-6 months on average.
